South Beach
South Beach, SoBe, is Miami's global postcard and its wildest contradiction: a historic Art Deco district where the buildings are pastel and protected, and the nights are electric and endless. Ocean Drive at golden hour, with the lifeguard towers and the Deco hotels glowing, is a scene the whole world recognizes.
We love SoBe for what it really is: a neighborhood that learned to be both museum and party, and refuses to choose.
The story
In the 1920s and 30s, South Beach rose as a resort district of elegant hotels in the new Art Deco style. After decades of decline, preservationists, led by the Miami Design Preservation League, saved hundreds of Deco buildings, creating the Art Deco Historic District, the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world.
The 1980s brought fashion shoots, then the clubs, then the fame. South Beach became the image of Miami for the planet, and the beach itself, wide and white, never stopped being the main attraction.
The vibe
By day: volleyball, rollerblades on the boardwalk, cafés on Ocean Drive, the slow theater of seeing and being seen. By night: the neon comes on, the Deco facades light up, and Collins and Washington Avenues turn into a runway.
SoBe's people are everyone: European tourists, Latin American families, models, locals who surf at dawn before the crowds. It is glamorous and gritty at once: that is the deal, and it works.
What to experience
Walk Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue through the Art Deco Historic District. Swim at South Beach itself, then cross to Miami Beach up the island. The Deco story lives in How Miami Was Made; the global image of Miami was built right here.
