Downtown Miami
Downtown is where Miami started and where it keeps restarting. Flagler Street, the Freedom Tower, Bayfront Park, the museums on the bay: the layers of the city's history are all here, stacked between the towers. It is the civic heart and the transit hub, the place every Miamian passes through.

The story
Downtown grew around the mouth of the Miami River after the city's 1896 incorporation. Flagler Street became the shopping spine; the Freedom Tower (1925) later became the 'Ellis Island of the South,' processing Cuban refugees in the 1960s.
Today the bayfront holds Museum Park, Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Frost Science museum, while the towers of the new Miami rise behind the historic core.
The vibe
Downtown is Miami at work: courts, offices, students, the Metromover gliding overhead for free. Bayfront Park hosts concerts and festivals; the riverwalk fills at lunch. It is less polished than Brickell, more real: the city's working center.
At night the towers light the bay, and the Adrienne Arsht Center draws the cultural crowd across the river.
What to experience
See the Freedom Tower, walk Bayfront Park to Museum Park (PAMM), ride the free Metromover, and cross to the Adrienne Arsht Center for a show. Ultra Music Festival takes over Bayfront Park every March.
