South Beach (the beach)
The beach of South Beach, wide, white, and lined with pastel lifeguard towers, is the image the world carries of Miami. It runs along Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue in the South Beach neighborhood, where the Art Deco district meets the Atlantic.
We come at dawn, when the light is gold, the water is glass, and the beach belongs to the swimmers and the runners.
The place
South Beach's sand is famously wide and pale, the water a gradient of turquoise that photographs itself. The shoreline is backed by the beachwalk, the dunes' sea grapes, and the pastel lifeguard towers that have become design icons in their own right.
It is a public beach, free and open: one of the great democratic pleasures of Miami: the same sand for everyone.
The vibe
By day: volleyball nets, music from portable speakers, a United Nations of sunbathers. The stretch between 5th and 15th Streets is the classic scene; further north it gets calmer and more local.
Late afternoon is the magic hour: the Deco hotels glow across Ocean Drive, and the beach exhales. Stay for sunset; the sky does the rest.
What to experience
Swim, walk the beachwalk north into Mid-Beach, then cross Ocean Drive into the Art Deco district. Lifeguard towers make the best photos at golden hour.
