Manatees
Manatees, the sea cows, are Miami's most beloved wild neighbors: slow, whiskered marine mammals that graze the seagrass meadows of Biscayne Bay and gather in the warm outflows on cool winter days. Seeing one surface beside your kayak is a Miami rite of passage.
We slow down for manatees, always: they were here first, and they are in no hurry.
The animal
Manatees are large, gentle herbivores, adults can weigh half a ton, that surface every few minutes to breathe. They feed on the bay's seagrass, which is why the health of the meadows is the health of the herd.
They are protected: boaters know the slow-speed zones, and the winter gatherings at warm-water spots are watched over like the treasures they are.
The vibe
A manatee encounter is pure calm: the back breaking the surface, the whiskered snout, the slow roll. Kayakers in the bay's quiet corners meet them regularly in winter; the rest of the year, patience and quiet water are the price of admission.
