The Everglades
The Everglades begin where Miami ends: a vast, shallow river of grass flowing southwest from Lake Okeechobee to Florida Bay: one of the most unique ecosystems on Earth, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the wild counterweight to the city's neon.
We go west to remember what was here first: sawgrass to the horizon, alligators on the banks, and a silence you can hear.
The place
The Everglades are not a swamp but a slow-moving river, inches deep and miles wide, flowing over limestone. Sawgrass prairies, cypress domes, hardwood hammocks and mangrove estuaries stack into a mosaic found nowhere else.
Everglades National Park, established in 1947, protects the southern reach: the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States.
The vibe
The Glades run on patience: an airboat at dawn, the sawgrass hissing in the wind, a gator sliding off the bank without a sound. The light is enormous; the horizon never ends.
It is the opposite of Miami and its perfect complement: the reason the city's wild edge never fully disappears.
What to experience
The park entrances west of the city (entry via the National Park Service site); airboat tours; the Anhinga Trail for guaranteed gator sightings. Pair with Biscayne Bay for the full water story.
