Calle Ocho Festival
The Calle Ocho Festival is the crown of Carnaval Miami: every March, SW 8th Street in Little Havana closes to traffic and opens to hundreds of thousands of people: stages, food, dancing, and the largest celebration of Latin culture in the United States.
We walk it end to end, every year: this is Miami's family reunion, and everyone is family.
The story
The festival grew out of Carnaval Miami, organized by the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, and became the defining street party of Cuban-American Miami: then of all of Miami. What started as a neighborhood celebration now draws crowds from across the hemisphere.
It remains a community event at heart: the food stands, the local stages, the domino tables that refuse to move for anyone.
The vibe
Fifteen blocks of pure Miami: salsa and reggaetón from competing stages, croquetas and churros, flags from a dozen countries, abuelas dancing better than everyone. The street smells of celebration and sounds like home.
Go hungry, wear comfortable shoes, and let the crowd carry you. Resistance is useless, and unnecessary.
What to experience
The full length of Calle Ocho between 12th and 27th Avenues; Máximo Gómez Park; the Tower Theater as landmark. Read Little Havana and the Cuban community first, the festival makes more sense with the story.
