Art Basel Miami Beach
Art Basel Miami Beach is the Americas' edition of the world's leading modern and contemporary art fair, held each December at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Since its first edition in 2002, it has been the anchor of Miami Art Week, and the single event that most changed how the world sees Miami.
We mark our year by it: before Basel and after Basel. The city exhales in December and inhales art.
The story
Art Basel, founded in Basel, Switzerland, chose Miami Beach for its Americas edition, opening in 2002. The fair brought the international art market to the city, and the city responded by building the cultural infrastructure to deserve it: PAMM's new building (2013), ICA Miami (2017), the Design District's rise.
Two decades on, the fair is inseparable from the city's identity: December in Miami means art, the way March means music and tennis.
The vibe
Inside the Convention Center: the art market at full power: blue-chip galleries, discovery sectors, conversations in a dozen languages. Outside: the beach, the parties, the public program on the sand. The fair is the engine; the city is the festival.
Even if you never enter the fair, the week transforms the streets: this is Miami performing its cultural coming-of-age, every year.
