Iguanas

The uninvited Floridians, sunbathing everywhere.

Green iguanas are Miami's most visible newcomers: large tropical lizards, introduced from Central and South America, now thoroughly at home: sunbathing on seawalls, raiding gardens, and occasionally falling from trees on cold snaps (they recover).

We find them funny, the gardeners find them otherwise: the iguana is Miami's wildest immigration debate.

The animal

Iguanas arrived via the pet trade and found South Florida's climate perfect. They are excellent swimmers and climbers, fond of seawalls, pools and hibiscus: the last much to gardeners' dismay. Cold snaps stun them into famous 'falling iguana' headlines; most wake up and carry on.

They are invasive, and managing them is an ongoing, very Floridian negotiation.

The vibe

An iguana doing push-ups on a seawall is peak Miami wildlife: prehistoric, unbothered, slightly comic. The bayfront parks and canals are their catwalks.

Love them or trap them, they are part of the city's fauna now: the tropics asserting itself, one lizard at a time.

What to experience

Any sunny seawall or canal bank; the bayfront parks. For the native story, see tropical birds and mangroves.
