Mangroves
Mangroves are Miami's unsung infrastructure: the salt-tolerant forests whose arched roots line the bay, the rivers and the keys: nurseries for fish, buffers against storms, and some of the most efficient carbon storage on the planet.
We point them out on every kayak trip: the tangle of roots is the city’s quiet engineering.
The place
Red, black and white mangroves fringe Biscayne Bay, the Everglades estuaries and the keys. Their prop roots trap sediment and shelter juvenile snapper, shrimp and crabs; their canopies host herons and pelicans.
After storms, the difference mangroves make is measurable: in calmer water and standing shorelines.
The vibe
A mangrove tunnel by kayak is one of Miami's best-kept secrets: green light, still water, crabs on the roots, the city suddenly far away. Oleta River State Park and the bay's spoil islands are the easy entries.
It is wild Miami at arm's length from downtown: proof the city never fully paved its edges.
What to experience
Kayak the mangrove trails at Oleta River or the bay; the boardwalks of Biscayne National Park. Read Biscayne Bay and The Everglades for the systems they protect.
