Alligators
Alligators are South Florida's original residents: armored, patient reptiles that rule the Everglades waterways and occasionally remind the suburbs who was here first. They are the symbol of wild Florida, and a conservation comeback story.
We respect the gator absolutely: look, photograph, never feed, never approach.
The animal
American alligators are apex predators of the freshwater Glades, shaping the ecosystem itself: their 'gator holes' hold water through the dry season and shelter whole communities of wildlife. Once endangered by hunting, they recovered under protection into one of conservation's great successes.
They are shy by nature and formidable by design: the rules are simple: keep your distance, keep pets close, never feed.
The vibe
The classic sighting: a gator motionless on a bank, one eye on you, utterly unimpressed. The Anhinga Trail in the park delivers them reliably; the airboat tours frame them against the sawgrass.
It is a brush with deep time: an animal that outlasted the dinosaurs, sunning itself an hour from downtown.
