Miami Art Week
Miami Art Week is the city's annual takeover by the global art world: anchored by Art Basel Miami Beach, it fills early December with satellite fairs, gallery openings, public installations, parties and murals being painted live across Wynwood, the Design District and South Beach.
We live this week at full speed: it is the seven days when Miami is the center of the art universe, and the whole city performs.
The story
When Art Basel opened its Miami Beach edition in 2002, satellite fairs and events multiplied around it until the whole first week of December became a single cultural phenomenon. Galleries from every continent show; collectors fly in; the city's museums mount their strongest exhibitions of the year.
What began as a fair became a season: Miami Art Week now drives the city's cultural calendar the way fashion week drives a fashion capital's.
The vibe
The week runs on beautiful chaos: fair-hopping by day, openings and parties by night, traffic as a contact sport. Wynwood's streets become an open studio; the Design District a runway; the beach a backdrop. Everyone is here, artists, collectors, celebrities, students, and the city feeds on the energy for months.
Our advice: pick three things a day, wear walking shoes, and accept that you will miss most of it. Everyone does.
