Coral Gables
Coral Gables is Miami in a different key: coral-rock walls, barrel-tile roofs, tree-canopied streets, all of it planned in the 1920s as 'The City Beautiful.' It is elegant, quiet, and serious about its beauty: the Mediterranean dream George Merrick drew on paper and built in limestone.
We come to the Gables for the architecture, the Biltmore, and the best people-watching over lunch on Miracle Mile.
The story
Developer George Merrick founded Coral Gables in the 1920s as a fully planned city in Mediterranean Revival style: strict codes, grand boulevards, plazas and fountains. The Biltmore Hotel (1926) became its crown jewel and a National Historic Landmark.
The Venetian Pool (1924), carved from a coral rock quarry, remains one of the most beautiful public pools in America. The city kept its codes and its canopy, and kept its character.
The vibe
The Gables move at a civilized pace: lunch on Miracle Mile, concerts at the Biltmore, students from the University of Miami mixing with old Coral Gables families. Everything is manicured, and proudly so.
It is the Miami of weddings, anniversaries and long lunches: the city showing its most refined face.
What to experience
Swim the Venetian Pool, tour the Biltmore, walk Miracle Mile and the residential streets. The Miami City Ballet and Florida Grand Opera perform nearby at the Arsht; the Gables are their natural home turf.
