Peacocks of the Grove
The peacocks of Coconut Grove are Miami's most flamboyant locals: free-roaming peafowl, descended from birds introduced generations ago, that strut the neighborhood's streets and gardens like they own the place: because, more or less, they do.
We stop the car for peacocks. Everyone does. It is Grove law.
The birds
Peafowl were introduced to the Grove long ago and went gloriously feral: the neighborhood's banyans and gardens suit them perfectly. The males' displays, the shimmering tail-fan, stop traffic in the most literal sense.
They are protected by local affection as much as by any ordinance: harm a Grove peacock and the neighborhood will know.
The vibe
A peacock crossing the road in the Grove is the day's best interruption: iridescent, unbothered, utterly Miami. They scream at dawn (fair warning), roost in the big trees, and photobomb the neighborhood's real-estate shoots.
They are the Grove's unofficial crest: bohemia with feathers.
What to experience
Drive or walk the Grove's residential streets slowly, especially mornings. Pair with Coconut Grove and Vizcaya.
